I’ll admit that I used to be completely addicted to Facebook.

I was one of those annoying people that would update their status every time a new thought come into their head. I’d look at photos of people I hadn’t seen in years and accept friend requests from people I actually disliked when I saw them in person. Nowadays, however, I’m getting bored of it. I’ll log on every few days and have hoards of notifications to go through, many of which are about someone wanting me to join CaféWorld or that someone else has sent me a tree in CityVille.

Now you might think, well why doesn’t she just not go on Facebook and avoid the situation. There is one simple answer. The rest of my world revolves around Facebook which means that I have to as well. Social events are no longer planned in person, instead you have to be invited over Facebook, university announcements are sent via Facebook instead of over email as they used to be, important conversations for some of the societies I’m involved in are now conducted over Facebook threads meaning I have to be on there to be involved in decision making.

Now I’m all for modernisation and technology development but I think it’s kind of scary how one website can influence people’s lives so much. We’ve now gone from the era of downloading a Facebook application onto your phone to actually having a specific Facebook button on the phone itself. For those of you that haven’t seen it, here is an example >>Clicky<<.

So my decision is that I will keep using Facebook but only on a needs-must basis. I’ll update my status only when I have something interesting to say. I’ll check my messages every couple of days to make sure I haven’t missed anything important. I’ll keep my Blackberry application so I can contact people that I cannot reach by phone. Other than that I’ll live my life instead of sitting on Facebook and watching other people live theirs.

I’m curious to hear your thoughts on where Facebook is heading.
